What is so important about pacifier size in relation to comfort and development?
by Dr. Dave Tesini, Pediatric Dentist, dad of 3, grandfather of 3
Measurement of body size helps us to define “things that fit”; the legs, the head, the feet, the mouth. It is important for our babies too… from their clothes to the feeding and soothing products they use. It is important from the newborn “onesies” you buy to the pacifier you choose. You want all these products to be comfortable for your baby…the pacifier size is all about comfort and we don’t want it to be too small or too large.
As parents, we don’t know the ins-and-outs of the pacifier size and we depend on the baby product company we choose to set the standard for us. A pediatric dentist is the best resource to help baby product companies to design pacifiers that fit your baby. Pediatric dentists are the experts on little teeth and little mouths. They know that if the design of a pacifier is not just right then it can lead to changes in the mouth and costly orthodontic problems later in life. That is why they advise different sizes from newborn to 18 months. If it fits right, it will feel comfortable to baby and provided the soothing you bought it for in the first place.
