Regardless of their age, reading out loud to children has many great benefits. YES… babies too! You can read magazines, books, notes, etc. And, once your children are old enough, they can read out loud to you so you can keep it going longer and help them with their skills.
Reasons why you should read to your little ones:
1 | It’s bonding time. There aren’t many activities where you pay as much attention. The intent listening has them pulled into your story. It creates an experience where they feel close to you and you feel close to them. When you are reading you are solely focusing on that and nothing else (unusual nowadays). Whether it’s before bed or during the day, the experience stays the same.
2 | Encourage imagination. Reading fictional books like fairytales can be fascinating for young minds. By introducing them to new characters and worlds you may encourage them to be more imaginative outside of reading time. Nothing beats the stories they come up with on their own!
3 | Learn about them. You can learn a lot about their interests based on the books they want to read most. Pulling more books on those topics can continue to build their knowledge and excitement about them. Plus, learning these things early on can be helpful once they are exploring subjects in school.
4 | Make reading fun. If you don’t read to your kids then they may not be as receptive to it in the classroom. Spending time reading to them can result in a positive outlook on storytelling. Choose books that have a surprising plot and graphics they can follow along with.
5 | Expand their vocabulary. When you read frequently you recognize the difference it can make in your everyday speech. This is the same with children. Reading new books to them can introduce them to new words and phrases they otherwise may not have known! Not only can this help them with reading & writing in school; it can help with their speech.
